Grigio Gran Selezione comes only from our most naturally blessed plots. Made of 80% Sangiovese blended with ancient indigenous varieties such as Abrusco, Pugnitello, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo and Mazzese, which contribute to the complexity of the wine, while retaining the full elegance and expression of San Felice's terroir.
A fantastic combination of power and finesse, this opens with aromas of under brush, ripe plum, truffle, leather, smoke and a balsamic note. The firm, delicious palate delivers fleshy black cherry, crushed raspberry, cinnamon and mocha. Velvety tannins support the juicy flavors.
Tight and powerful, exuding blackberry, black currant, plum, violet and leather flavors. Dense and extracted, finishing with solid tannins. Best from 2017 through 2024. - BS
The 2011 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Il Grigio is a bigger, richer wine than the straight Il Grigio, partly the result of inclusion of a handful of indigenous grapes that help give the wine much of its personality. Sage, tobacco, lavender and cured meats are some of the notes that round out the powerful finish. Today, the 2011 is shaping up to be a decidedly virile, intense wine. There is certainly no shortage of personality here. For its Gran Selezione, San Felice has crafted a Sangiovese -based wine that incorporates a number of nearly-extinct native varieties, including Abrusco, Pugnitello, Malvasia Nera, Ciliegiolo and Mazzese.
Antonio Galloni - Vinous: 90 Points
San Felice's 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Il Grigio is open, resonant and highly expressive. Succulent red cherries, iron, spices, tobacco, cedar and leather blossom in a generous, inviting Riserva that can be enjoyed today or cellared for up to at least a handful of years. The 2011 offers good freshness for the year, but the ripeness and generosity of the vintage come through just the same.
