Protea Chenin Blanc 2024
Juicy, sun-kissed character of a perfect apricot, maybe a hint of that slightly fuzzy skin. Then, zipping right through that comes this vibrant streak of lemon. It's not a sharp, aggressive citrus; it's more like the fragrant oil you get when you zest a fresh lemon, adding a lovely lift and brightness. A fleeting sweetness dances in the background.
Nose: Aromas of stone fruit: apricot, nectarine, and peach. Gentle secondary notes of lemon zest and other citrus notes like lime and grapefruit.
Palate: Fruity and refreshing, mirroring the aromas with flavors of nectarine, apricot, quince, and melon. A vibrant, fresh acidity provides a lively and tangy character. A subtle citrus pith note can add a pleasant texture and complexity.
Finish: The vivid fruit lingers, accompanied by the balanced acidity.
Pairing
Fresh Seafood: Think flaky white fish like cod or sole, simply pan-seared or grilled with a squeeze of lemon. The wine's acidity will cut through any richness and complement the delicate flavors.
Shellfish: Oysters, shrimp, scallops, and mussels are fantastic partners. The zesty notes in the wine echo the freshness of the sea. Consider a shrimp scampi or grilled scallops with a citrus butter sauce.
Salads with Zing: Salads with bright vinaigrettes, especially those containing citrus fruits, goat cheese, or fresh herbs, will find a lovely harmony with the Chenin Blanc.
Light Pasta Dishes: Pasta with creamy lemon sauces, pesto, or spring vegetables will be beautifully balanced by the wine's acidity and fruitiness.
Chenin Blanc
Hailing from the Loire Valley in France as far back as the 9th century, Chenin Blanc has since traveled the globe. While the Loire remains its ancestral home and produces some of its most iconic expressions, South Africa has embraced it wholeheartedly and now boasts the largest plantings worldwide, where it's also known as "Steen." You'll also find significant plantings in California (where it has a long history), as well as in Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and even smaller pockets elsewhere.
