PlumpJack Oakville Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2021
The vines in the rocky soils on the east side of our estate give us wines with a darker fruit profile, more concentration, more palate weight, and more tannin. In a low rainfall year like 2021, this can be even more accentuated. The 2021 PlumpJack Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon does not disappoint. Aromas of raspberry, boysenberry, blackberry, plum, and cassis leap from the glass. The classic Oakville sage and iron lay just beneath the fruit, and the oak barrels contribute a subtle spice and a sweet note reminiscent of toffee and mocha. The palate bursts with dark fruits and has a silky texture with firm yet supple tannin. The acidity brings life to the wine and contributes to a beautiful, lengthy finish.
Nose: Intense aromas of ripe dark fruits: Blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum are prominent, creating a juicy and inviting bouquet. Cardamom, cinnamon, and a hint of peppercorn contribute to the aromatic profile.
Palate: Rich and concentrated flavors of dark fruit: The palate echoes the nose with flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry, and plum, but with added intensity and complexity. Velvety smooth tannins.
Finish: long and satisfying, with lingering flavors of dark fruit and a touch of oak. It's a wine that leaves a lasting impression, with the flavors and aromas continuing to evolve on the palate even after the wine has been swallowed
Pairing
Steak: A classic pairing, especially with cuts like ribeye, New York strip, or filet mignon.
Lamb Chops: The rich flavors of lamb complement the wine's dark fruit notes and tannins.
Venison: The gamey flavor of venison pairs well with the wine's bold character.
Aged Cheeses: Strong, aged cheeses like aged cheddar, Gouda, or blue cheese can stand up to the wine's tannins and acidity.
Truffle Cheese: The earthy, complex flavors of truffle cheese complement the wine's notes of spice and earth..
Rated 98-points Jeb Dunnuck
“It’s an absolutely killer bottle of wine offering pure cassis and darker currant fruits as well as textbook tobacco, Oakville iron, black olive, dark chocolate, and graphite. It’s full-bodied, massively concentrated, has building tannins, flawless balance, and a great, great finish. It will probably merit an additional point or two in 5-7 years and, I suspect, will be a 30+-year wine.”
History
Our story begins in 1992 with the opening of a humble wine store in the Cow Hollow/Marina neighborhood of San Francisco called PlumpJack Wine & Spirits. Founded by Gavin Newsom, this store provided an inviting space for people to explore and discover the world of wines in a friendly, approachable atmosphere.
The inspiration behind the name came from one of Shakespeare’s most unforgettable characters, Sir John “PlumpJack” Falstaff. This down-to-earth, fun-loving, and irreverent character shared an unbreakable bond of loyalty with Prince Hal (Henry V) over many goblets of sack (wine) at the local tavern.
Embracing the spirit of camaraderie and enjoyment, Newsom and acclaimed composer and philanthropist Gordon Getty decided to open a winery that would embody the essence of PlumpJack’s character. Their vision took shape when they acquired a historic 42-acre Estate in the heart of Napa Valley, renowned for producing dynamic, long-lived wines that captured the essence of Oakville, dating back to 1881.
Over the years, the property changed hands and found its way to different owners, including James and Anne McWilliams, in 1974. Then, in 1995, the McWilliams received a proposal to revive winemaking at the historic Estate. Thus, PlumpJack Estate Winery was born with a commitment to crafting high-quality wines that celebrated the land and remained approachable.
A pivotal moment arrived in the 1990s when the wine industry faced a growing problem—cork taint or trichloroanisole (TCA)—resulting in undesirable flavors in bottled wines. Not willing to compromise on quality, Getty and General Manager John Conover took a bold step toward innovation. PlumpJack Estate Winery pioneered alternative closures on luxury wines, introducing screw caps with our flagship 1997 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, eliminating the risk of TCA while ensuring bottle consistency and longevity. Still, to this day, we bottle our Estate and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons 50% under screw cap and 50% under cork as part of our long-term experiment.
In 2012, Winemaker Aaron Miller joined the team, and continues carrying on the legacy of producing elegant wines that pay homage to our Oakville Estate Vineyard, garnering widespread critical acclaim. Miller and his team achieved notable milestones when the 2013, 2015, and 2016 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignons earned perfect 100-point scores from Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate—a testament to their dedication to quality and approachability.
