Vino de Montana Vinedos Viejos 2020
This Spanish red offers a captivating blend of rustic character and surprising elegance, driven by its old-vine mountain origins, showcasing vibrant red fruits and an earthy, mineral complexity.
Nose: The aromatics are expressive and inviting, leaning towards bright red berry fruits like cranberry, red currant, and fresh strawberry, with a distinct spicy note (white pepper, cinnamon). There's a lovely floral perfume (rose petal, violet) that adds to its charm. Underlying these are savory hints of game, crushed herbs (garrigue), and an earthy minerality (granite, flint), reflecting its unique terroir.
Palate: On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with a juicy and fresh character. The red fruit flavors from the nose are vibrant and pure. Smooth and rounded, with a "velvet-like" texture despite having fine, dryish tannins that provide structure without being harsh. A bright, fresh acidity is a hallmark, contributing to its "endlessly drinkable" quality and overall balance.
Finish: The finish is clean, long, and moreish, with lingering red fruit, spicy nuances, and that distinctive earthy or mineral note. It leaves a pleasant, refreshing aftertaste.
Pairing
Grilled Chicken or Pork Tenderloin: Simple preparations with herbs.
Grilled Sausages: Chorizo or other Spanish-style sausages.
Tapas: Patatas Bravas (without overly heavy sauce), jamón serrano, cured meats, olives, grilled vegetables.
Paella (Chicken/Vegetable/Mixed): The wine's freshness can cut through the richness.
Mushroom-based dishes: Especially grilled portobellos or mushroom risotto.
Lentil or Bean Stews: With herbs and root vegetables.
History
Wine is one of the best things in life and much more than a beverage; it is culture, geography, and poetry in a bottle. The magic of wine lies in its ability to give us sensorial and gastronomic pleasure, while also stimulating us aesthetically and emotionally.
We want to make wines sensitively, wines with soul, with which the consumer can create a deeper connection. Wines that have personality and reflect their origins, that are fresh, pure, contemporary, and relevant to the consumer.
To be authentic, a wine must be free of defects. Oxidation, phenols from Brettanomyces, or excessive volatile acidity may be typical in some winemaking styles, but they arise as a consequence of the process, not the terroir. The absence of defects doesn't make a wine interesting, but defects don't replace a wine's lack of interest.
The quality and potential personality of a wine are determined in the vineyard. However, this quality and personality are realized (or not) in the winery. Wine is a natural product, but also an art and a craft. The control of viticulture is crucial. But so is its integration with oenology. Therefore, we are both viticulturists and oenologists.
We make wines to be enjoyed, not to receive high scores in competitions and tastings. Harmony and drinkability are more important than concentration. Length and complexity matter more to us than power and intensity. Elegance, minerality, and a fine texture are other characteristics of the wines we enjoy making and drinking.
