Orin Swift Sign of the Times Red Blend 2023
Orin Swift has never shied away from new ideas. Sign of the Times is exactly that — a reflection of the uncanny moment we find ourselves as art and the artificial tests our intelligence and the line between real and surreal dissolves.
Fear and optimism are easy gut reactions to new technology. Curiosity takes work. With every revolution, you can resist or jump in — the important thing is to do neither blind.
This is a limited edition release. Don’t miss out because once it’s gone, it won’t be back again.
For this label, our founder and winemaker, Dave Phinney, trained an AI model on his past artwork to generate new interpretations, each manipulated and finished by hand. Going back and forth, the model and Dave prompted each other to reflect on the past while using it as a starting point for a new experiment. The camera didn’t only invent the art of photography, it reinvented the field of painting. This label is us trying to do both; invent something new and reimagine what we’ve already made.
Notes
2023 California Red Wine Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, and Grenache An opaque fuchsia core and a crimson laced rim introduces one to the 2023 Sign of the Times. Pleasing opening aromatics have notes of black plum, blackcurrant, dark chocolate and leather. The palate centers the attention with tones of blue fruits , more cassis , a hint of licorice and sweet oak. Well integrated tannins keep the wine approachable in its youth while the balancing acidity gives it some aging potential.
Nose: The aromatics are powerful and complex. You're greeted with notes of black plum, blackcurrant, dark chocolate, and leather. There are bright, red-fruited notes from the Grenache, like violet and dried rose petal, woven throughout.
Palate: The wine's entry is plush and rich. The palate centers on tones of blue fruits and cassis, with a hint of licorice and sweet oak. The texture is full and opulent. Well-integrated tannins give the wine a supple mouthfeel, making it approachable in its youth. The balancing acidity provides a firm backbone.
Finish: The finish is long and satisfying, supported by a firm spine of tangy b
lood orange acidity. The dark fruit, mineral, and sweet oak notes linger beautifully.
Pairing
Grilled Ribeye or Sirloin Steak: The wine's structure stands up to the richness of a great cut of beef.
Slow-cooked Short Ribs or Oxtail: The luscious texture and dark fruit of the wine are perfect with these rich, savory dishes.
Roast Lamb: A classic pairing for a Grenache and Syrah blend.
Rich Mushroom Ragout: The earthy notes in the wine will be a perfect complement.
Aged Cheddar or Gouda: The nutty, savory flavors pair beautifully with the wine's richness.
Dark Chocolate Desserts: A surprisingly good pairing, where the wine's dark chocolate notes will be amplified.
THE ORIN SWIFT STORY
10 years ago we first opened our doors and invited old and new friends to join us for a drink. This year, we’re excited to invite you next door as we open our expanded and reimagined tasting experience building on all that we’ve learned from the past decade. In a historic bank building in downtown St. Helena, we’ve designed a space to bring you into our world. Thoughtful details and raw materials compliment four new tasting experiences: Rock, Paper, Scissors, and The Vault. From casual to curated, our new tasting room is the perfect introduction to Orin Swift, and the only place for ride-or-die fans to enjoy personalized deep dives.
