J Vineyards Chardonnay California 2022
Our smooth and inviting Russian River Valley Chardonnay showcases the best of this classic cool-climate region. Appealing aromas of florals and citrus open at first pour, while the layered, flavorful palate adds notes of white peach, pear, pineapple and fresh-cut Meyer lemon. Subtle accents of toasted hazelnut, vanilla and gingersnap add rich complexity and depth, a hallmark of the wine’s French oak aging.
Nose: The aromatics are inviting and layered. Expect prominent notes of ripe golden apple and juicy pear, often complemented by tropical fruit hints like pineapple or tangerine. Undertones of vanilla, lightly toasted oak, and sometimes a delicate butterscotch or graham cracker note are also discernible, indicating barrel influence. A subtle hint of ginger might also appear, adding a touch of spice.
Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and silky-smooth, offering a plush and satisfying mouthfeel. Flavors of apple, pear, and tropical fruit dominate, echoing the nose. The oak contribution adds a delightful creamy texture and notes of vanilla custard or toasted hazelnut.
Despite its richness, it maintains a crisp, refreshing acidity that provides balance and prevents it from feeling heavy, making it "bright" and "full through the middle."
Finish: The finish is generally long, bright, and clean, with lingering notes of fruit, vanilla, and a subtle toast. It concludes smoothly, often with a hint of ginger or toasted coconut, leaving a pleasant and "mouthwatering" sensation.
Pairing
Baked or Grilled Salmon: Its rich, oily texture pairs beautifully with the Chardonnay's body and creamy notes.
Pan-Seared Scallops: Especially with a brown butter sauce. The wine's richness complements the sweetness of the scallops.
Roast Chicken or Turkey: Especially preparations that involve herbs, butter, or a creamy sauce.
Chicken in Creamy Sauces: Think chicken Alfredo or chicken with a mushroom cream sauce.
Winemaking
Our J winemaking team, led by Nicole Hitchcock, strives to translate the diversity of the Russian River Valley – from the cool, coastal locations to the bright, sun-drenched hillsides – to the bottle.
Born and raised in Carmel, California, Nicole first discovered her passion for wine while working alongside well-respected restaurant sommeliers. What drew her in especially was the worldwide appeal and diversity of wine.
“Wine is like a universal language. It can transcend physical and cultural boundaries, and ultimately brings people together,” Nicole explains. “From early on, I was enamored by all parts of the industry and process — the journey from vine to glass, the varying tastes and the cultural aspects.”
Nicole attended the University of California at Davis, where she earned a degree in Viticulture and Enology and a minor in the Italian language. This combination enabled her to work at an agriturismo in Todi, Umbria for a summer.
After graduation, Nicole worked a harvest in Napa Valley, then transitioned to sales, working with both retail and restaurant customers. Nicole returned to the hands-on side of wine in 2004 when she traveled to Western Australia for a harvest internship.
Back in the U.S., Nicole took a role as a winemaker, crafting wines grown throughout Northern California. In 2015, Nicole also earned an MBA from the Wine Business Institute at Sonoma State University, gaining an academic perspective on the business of the wine industry as well as how it will evolve in the future.
Today, Nicole is the head winemaker at J Vineyards & Winery, where she oversees all aspects of winemaking. Nicole’s passion for winemaking continues to grow as she crafts world-class sparkling and varietal wines from cool-climate fruit grown in the renowned Russian River Valley and Sonoma County.
Our winemaking philosophy begins with sourcing the best fruit at the optimal time from the best locations in the Russian River Valley and Sonoma County. Diverse soils and cool, coastal micro-climates create unique growing conditions to maximize flavor and expression. In the renowned wine growing region, J Vineyards & Winery are true stewards of the land, tending to cool-climate grape varieties that offer fruit forward flavors and a crisp natural acidity.
