Tasting Notes
This wine immediately impresses with its deep garnet color and complex nose of dark fruit, black pepper, hints of mocha and slight herbal notes. The palate is mouth-filling and showcases beautiful structure. The restrained tannins and lingering finish beckon one back for more of this enjoyable wine.
Nose: Immediate bursts of blackcurrant and ripe cherry. It's intensely fruity, almost juicy in its aromatic presence. Fascinating note of cola emerges, lending a subtle sweetness and spice. There's also that distinct, cooling hint of eucalyptus, which always transports me to sunny California vineyards. A grounding earthiness, like freshly tilled soil, and a delicate whisper of mocha that beautifully rounds out the bouquet.
Palate: Blackcurrant and cherry are still front and center, now joined by a lovely, ripe blueberry note that adds to its juiciness. This is definitely a medium-bodied wine. What stands out is the texture of the tannins – they're present, giving structure, but remarkably smooth and nuanced, never harsh. I also get a delightful "milk chocolate cherries" sensation, a harmonious blend of sweet fruit and a comforting richness.
Finish: Pleasant and smooth. It's not overly long, but it's clean and satisfying, leaving behind lingering notes of those delicious dark fruits and a touch of that earthy, mocha character. It feels balanced and very approachable, making me eager for another "taste."
Pairing
Grilled Meats: This is a natural fit. Think char-grilled steak (ribeye or New York strip), lamb chops, or a juicy beef burger. The wine's fruit and structure can stand up to the richness and savory char.
Hearty Roasts: A slow-roasted beef short rib or a classic pot roast would be fantastic. The wine's fruit can complement the richness, and its smooth tannins will handle the protein well.
Savory Pasta Dishes: Consider pasta with a rich beef ragu or a mushroom and sausage lasagna. The fruit and subtle earthy notes of the wine will harmonize with these comforting flavors.
Pizza: The subtle cola, mocha, and earthy notes can beautifully complement the browned crust, cured meats, and herbs on a pizza.
History
Since its establishment in 1880 as California’s 29th bonded winery, Geyser Peak has been at the forefront of quality wine production since its earliest days. Founded by a pioneer of Alexander Valley winemaking, the original winery site was selected for its relation to The Geysers, discovered only 33 years prior. The winery was perched on a hillside, commanding a view of Geyser Peak Mountain and the white steam that billowed from its peaks. Geothermal activity in the region afforded diverse soil profiles, optimal for growing wine grapes. This later inspired the winery’s motto of “Reach for the Peak”, a mission of seeking out the utmost quality.
The brand has seen a storied past of over 140 years, founded locally and later managed by corporate interests. Today Geyser Peak is proudly returning to its roots as a family-owned and operated business, sourcing fruit from famed winegrowing regions of California and capturing the essence of Sonoma terroir. The wines speak to a sense of adventure, community and provenance – made for enjoying wherever life takes you
Light garnet-red in color, this wine is fruit forward with nuanced tannins. The nose of dark and red fruit with a subtle touch of eucalyptus follows through to the palate. It is a very approachable Cabernet, perfect for pairing with any meal.
