Gaja Ca'Marcanda Promis Toscana IGT 2023
A celebrated "Super Tuscan" from Angelo Gaja’s estate in the Bolgheri/Bibbona region of coastal Tuscany. The name Promis (derived from the Italian word promessa) represents the Gaja family’s "promise" of quality from their then-new Tuscan venture, which began in 1996.
Nose: A complex and "savory" bouquet. It leads with red cherry and crunchy rhubarb, but is defined by spicy layers of black pepper, cloves, and roasted coffee.
Deeper nuances of vanilla bean, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and a subtle earthiness or dried herb character (like sage or bay leaf) are also typically present, indicative of high-quality oak aging and complex terroir.
Palate: Fresh, juicy, and medium-bodied. The Syrah provides a fleshy texture, while the Merlot ensures a silky mouthfeel. Expect flavors of wild blueberry, licorice, and a distinct balsamic/graphite edge.
Finish: Long and persistent with a touch of Mediterranean scrub and a subtle smoky note.
Pairing
Grilled Meats: Lamb chops with rosemary, skirt steak with peppercorn sauce, or a classic burger with caramelized onions.
Tuscan Classics: Wild boar ragù over pappardelle or a rich mushroom risotto.
Savory Vegetables: Roasted peppers, eggplant parmigiana, or dishes featuring black olives and capers.
Cheese: Aged Pecorino Toscano or a firm Gouda.
History
Located in Piedmont in northwestern Italy, the GAJA winery is widely considered to be one of the greatest estates in the world, producing coveted and collectible labels. GAJA is a pioneer and guardian of tradition, a legacy that continues to reshape the standard for excellence in the world of winemaking today. Angelo Gaja was the first to produce single vineyard wines in Piedmont and revolutionized wine making practices in the region, introducing Bordeaux varietals and the use of barriques.
GAJA has led Barbaresco to international acclaim and brought about a resurgence of Italian wines more broadly. Today, the GAJA Winery owns 240 acres of vineyards in the Barbaresco DOCG (Barbaresco and Treiso) and the Barolo DOCG (Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra).
