G & C Lurton Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County
The G & C Lurton Cabernet Sauvignon is a fascinating "Old World meets New World" project. It is produced by the husband-and-wife team of Gonzalo and Claire Lurton, who are royalty in the Bordeaux wine world (owning prestigious estates like Château Durfort-Vivens and Château Bouscaut). In Sonoma County, they apply their French sensibilities to California fruit, resulting in a Cabernet that focuses more on elegance and structure than pure "fruit bomb" power.
Nose:A refined bouquet of black cherry and cassis, but what stands out is the Bordeaux-like savory edge: notes of graphite (pencil lead), dried herbs (sage/thyme), and cedar.
Palate: Medium-to-full bodied. Unlike many Napa Cabernets that can feel "jammy," this wine has a linear, precise structure. It features dark fruit flavors balanced by an earthy, stony minerality. The tannins are firm and well-sculpted, providing a "dusty" texture that is very food-friendly. The acidity is bright and lifted.
Finish: Long and dry, with lingering notes of cocoa powder and tobacco leaf.
Pairing
Classic Red Meats: Grilled Hanger Steak with a chimichurri sauce or Roasted Leg of Lamb with rosemary and garlic.
French Influence: Duck Confit or a hearty Beef Bourguignon.
Earthiness: Mushroom Risotto or wood-fired pizza with truffle oil and fontina cheese.
Cheese: Hard, savory cheeses like Comté (aged), Mimolette, or a high-quality Clothbound Cheddar.
History
Here the past and the future happily combine. The Bordeaux savoir-faire and new organic and biodynamic practices. The 1855 Grands Crus Classés and New World Grands Vins.
Two historical families in the production and commercialization of great Bordeaux wines: The Merlaut’ family, from which Claire comes, and the Lurton’ family Gonzague’s. They take over the lead of their respective family estates in 1992 and 1993. Gonzague inherits Chateau Durfort-Vivens, Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux. As for Claire, she inherits Chateau Haut-Bages Libéral, Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Paulliac, Chateau Ferriere, Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, and Chateau La Gurgue, in Margaux.
Together, in 2012, they realize the project of a life-time and create a new wine Estate in the Sonoma Valley, California: Acaibo.
For both Gonzague and Claire, wine is first and foremost a family tradition: the Lurton family for him and the Merlaut family for her are references in the Médoc. In creating G&C Lurton Estates, they have more than just an ambition, they have a real mission: to switch to organic viticulture and pass on to their children a healthy and resilient vineyard. A challenge that they are taking up in harmony with their teams: technical directors, cellar masters, vineyard managers, winemakers....
In the vineyards as in the cellars, traditional know-how is passed on and new agroecological practices are disseminated.
These values of sharing and transmission are reflected in their wines, created to illuminate moments in life and engrave memories in the minds of those who taste them.
