Frida Kahlo Single Vineyard Red Blend 2019
Intense ruby red, with a clean and bright appearance. On the nose, intense notes of coffee and chocolate stand out, coming from its aging in French oak, accompanied by elegant notes of ripe red fruit. On the palate it feels velvety, with good volume and a delicate balance between its sweetness and acidity. Long and persistent finish.
Nose: The aromas are intense and layered. Notes of black cherry, raspberry, and blackberry. The fruit is complemented by savory and earthy notes of tobacco, cedar, and graphite. Secondary hints of vanilla and baking spices, which add a warm and inviting layer to the aromatic profile.
Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and robust. The flavors of dark and red fruit are pronounced and pure, supported by a firm, yet polished, tannic structure. The wine has a good balancing acidity that gives it freshness. The oak influence is well-integrated, providing a velvety texture and a touch of sweetness without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: The finish is long, dry, and resonant, with the dark fruit, savory, and spicy notes lingering beautifully.
Pairing
Grilled Steak: The wine's structure stands up to the richness of a great cut of beef.
Roasted Lamb: The wine's savory notes and tannins are a fantastic match.
BBQ-style dishes: The bold flavors complement smoky, grilled meats.
Mole Poblano: The rich, complex flavors of mole sauce are a perfect match for the wine's dark fruit and savory notes.
Carne Asada or other grilled, marinated meats.
Birria: The rich, spiced stew would be a great partner.
Aged cheeses: Manchego, aged cheddar, or Parmesan.
Climate
Chile’s Mediterranean climate features warm, dry summers and cold, rainy winters. The proximity of the Andes Mountains plays an important role, and as the mountains rise in altitude, the temperatures drop. The interaction between the effects of the Andes and those of the Pacific Ocean during the growing season creates a broad daily temperature differential that helps the grapes develop fresh flavors and tremendous typicity. The Pacific Ocean is also important to vineyard development.
Chile’s coasts have two great characteristics, their westward orientation and the cold Humboldt Current, which work together to create continental winds that have a cooling effect in the country’s central zone and result in wines with higher acidity and elegant aromas. The healthy, well-drained soils have a variety of origins (alluvial, colluvial, fluvial, etc.) and textures (marl, clay, sand, silt). Despite the relatively dry weather conditions, abundant water for irrigation flows from the eternal ice of the Andes Mountains.
History
Viña Carmen: Founded in 1850 by Christian Lanz, Viña Carmen is the oldest and one of the most historic wineries in Chile. The winery, named in honor of his wife, has a long history of pioneering in the Chilean wine industry. They were the first to identify and cultivate Carmenère, a grape that was once thought to be extinct. They were also the first Chilean winery to create an organic wine line.
