Fattoria Montecchio Chianti Classico Riserva 2019 DOCG
This Italian Sangiovese is a powerful, complex, and traditionally structured red wine. It offers deep complexity from extendedaging and a true expression of the Tuscan terroir.
Nose: The aromas are rich and savory. A core of dark red cherry and dried cranberry, layered with classic Sangiovese notes of dried herbs, leather, and tobacco leaf. There are pronounced savory elements of earth, dried flowers (potpourri), and a subtle ferrous minerality. I find hints of sweet spice and vanilla from its time in barrel.
Palate: On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a firm, structured texture. The flavors are concentrated, dominated by savory red fruit and an earthy quality. It is a dry wine with high, assertive tannins that are polished by age and a bright, high acidity that is the hallmark of Sangiovese and makes this wine incredibly food-friendly. The balance is taut and elegant.
Finish: The finish is long, dry, and distinctly savory, with the leather, tobacco, and dried fruit notes lingering beautifully.
Pairing
Given its assertive tannins, high acidity, and savory complexity, the Fattoria Montecchio Chianti Classico Riserva is a quintessential food wine, perfect for rich Italian and Mediterranean dishes.
Bistecca alla fiorentina (Florentine Steak): The high tannins and acidity cut perfectly through the fat and richness of the steak.
Savory Ragu: Pasta dishes with rich, slow-cooked meat sauces (like Bolognese or Wild Boar Ragu).
Osso Buco: Braised veal shanks.
Earthier options: Dishes with Truffles or Porcini Mushrooms
History
Wine production in the hills of Tuscany, particularly between Florence and Siena, has existed since Etruscan times. By the Middle Ages, the area known as Chianti was recognized for its excellent red wines. The region was a zone of constant conflict between the powerful rival cities of Florence and Siena.
The Black Rooster (Gallo Nero): The famous symbol of Chianti Classico originates from a medieval legend used to settle a border dispute between the two cities. The Florentines supposedly won the best land by exploiting the rules of a horse race, where a black rooster (Gallo Nero) was the symbol used to demarcate the territory.
