Famiglia Castellani Toscana Sangiovese 2019
Uncork the magic of Famiglia Castellani Toscana Sangiovese 2019! The nose bursts with ripe red fruits and a touch of oak. On the palate, you'll savor lush berry notes with a hint of herbal freshness. It finishes gracefully, leaving a warm and inviting aftertaste.
Nose: Primary aromas of classic Sangiovese red fruit. Tart red cherry and sour cherry, and red currant. Ripe plum and a touch of blackberry from good fruit ripeness. Dried herbs (like oregano or thyme), a touch of earthiness, and subtle leather or tobacco leaf note starting to emerge with its age.
Palate: Medium-bodied with a good backbone of bright, refreshing acidity – a hallmark of Sangiovese. The tart red fruit flavors dominate, mirroring the nose (cherry, cranberry). The tannins are well-integrated, giving a pleasant, slightly firm grip without being overly aggressive.
Finish: Clean and persistent, with the tart red fruit and a touch of that savory, earthy character lingering. The refreshing acidity would make it quite food-friendly.
Pairing
Tomato-Based Pasta Dishes: This is a match made in heaven. Think spaghetti with marinara sauce, lasagna, pasta arrabbiata, or pasta al ragu (Bolognese). The wine's acidity beautifully cuts through the acidity of the tomatoes and the richness of the meat.
Pizza: Any classic red-sauce pizza, especially Margherita or a pepperoni/sausage pizza. The wine's acidity and fruit are perfect for balancing the cheese and savory toppings.
Parmigiana: Eggplant Parmigiana or Chicken Parmigiana. The wine handles the richness and tomato sauce with ease.
History
The castellani family business began in montecalvoli in the late 1800s with alfredo, already a winemaker, who decided to start bottling and selling his own wine.
Duilio, alfredo’s son, together with his brother mario initiates the expansion phase of the company. In later years giorgio, duilio’s eldest son, began exporting.
In ’66, with the great flood, the montecalvoli winery suffered severe damage. And so roberto, giorgio’s brother, leaves the journalism profession to join the family business.
Roberto initiates a new phase for the family business: that of exports on a global scale. In the same years an expansion of the winery also takes place with the acquisition of the poggio al casone estate.
