Domaine Pichot Vouvray 2023
Beautiful deep golden yellow color with brilliant reflections. Impressive nose of concentration with aromas of flowers and ripe fruit. On the palate, beautiful aromatic richness, fruit perfectly balanced by the very present minerality.
Nose: The aromatics are expressive and inviting. Expect prominent notes of ripe orchard fruits such as golden apple, pear, and quince, complemented by a hint of honeydew melon. Subtle floral notes of honeysuckle or white blossom are usually present, alongside a distinctive minerality (often described as wet stone, chalk, or even a faint iodine/flint) that speaks of its Loire Valley origins. A touch of ginger or spicy honey might also emerge.
Palate: On the palate, the wine is typically medium-bodied with a juicy and fresh character. The ripe fruit flavors from the nose, particularly apple, pear, and melon, are vibrant and pure. Its key characteristic is the excellent interplay between a refreshing, crisp acidity and a subtle touch of sweetness (off-dry or "tendre"). This slight sweetness perfectly balances the acidity, creating a harmonious and very drinkable wine that is "beautifully balanced." The minerality often translates to a clean, focused feel on the palate, contributing to its length and purity.
Finish: The finish is clean, long, and invigorating, with lingering notes of orchard fruit, bright acidity, and a delicate mineral essence. It leaves the palate feeling refreshed and eager for another sip.
Pairing
Pad Thai: A classic.
Curries: Mild to medium Thai or Indian curries (e.g., chicken or vegetable curries with coconut milk).
Sushi & Sashimi: Its purity and fruit notes work well, especially with richer fish.
Vietnamese Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce:
Roasted Pork Tenderloin: Especially with an apple or fruit chutney/sauce.
Winery
Jean-Claude Pichot’s family is one of the oldest in Vouvray, with origins as viticulturists and restaurateurs dating back to 1739. The family cellars are located in the charming village of Vouvray, in caverns hewn from the rolling hills which were once quarried to provide stone to construct the grand châteaux of the Loire. Domaine Pichot was established in 1996, uniting the three historic vineyards of the family: Coteau de la Biche, Le Peu de la Moriette, and Le Marigny. The 60 acres of vineyards are all in Vouvray, six miles east of Tours on the right bank of the Loire River. The vines are thirty years old on average and are all of the Chenin Blanc variety. In an era when most Vouvray wines are bottled by négotiants, the stylish wines of the Pichot family continue to show the perfumed elegance of Chenin Blanc and are authentic expressions of a particular terrain, climate, cellar, and the winemaker’s art.
