Cline Rock Carved Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 2020
This Rock Carved Cabernet is planted in two different vineyards, one is on the Russian River’s edge in the middle of the valley floor, in well-drained alluvial gravel soils. Heat combined with perfect growing conditions provide a rich, round and lushly textured Cabernet. The second vineyard is planted in the southernmost part of the valley on the benchlands overlooking Alexander Valley. Here the soils are richer yet rockier. Grapes from this vineyard are harvested later at lower brix and provide concentration and complexity.
Notes
This is a bordeaux-esque wine with silky, lush and bold tannins. Silky smooth, and packing a punch well above its respective price-point.
Production
Grapes are hand-harvested at night, gently destemmed, and transferred to stainless steel closed top tanks. The wine ferments naturally warm as the wild yeast begins fermentation. Temperatures peak at up to 100°F and the wine is left on skins for 24 days to ensure complete fermentation. It is pumped over twice a day early on and at peak fermentation it is pumped-over 3 times a day before dropping to once a day for the final 8 days. It is gently drained and pressed off into separate fractions for ML fermentation in barrel.
Alexander Valley
Alexander Valley is well-known for producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon in Sonoma County. Grapes for Rock Carved are harvested from two vineyards. One is planted on the Russian River’s edge in the middle of the valley floor, in well-drained alluvial gravel soils. Together you have the best of both.
History
Our dad, Fred started Cline Family Cellars in 1982 in Oakley, California, making his first vintages from original plantings of Mourvèdre, Zinfandel, and Carignane, some of which dated back to the 1880s.
In 1989, he and our mom Nancy, purchased a 350-acre horse farm in Sonoma-Carneros and moved the winery here. This is where we were raised.
Our dad was one of the original Rhone Rangers and began planting vineyards dedicated to Syrah, Viognier, Marsanne, and Roussanne. Since those first plantings, our family has continued to plant vineyards throughout Sonoma County, expanding to include more classic varieties like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
We have been growing wine for 40 years. Our star winemakers Tom Gendall and Katie Hoggins are masters at the art of making stylish noble varietals, Rhone and Zinfandel wines. They firmly believe that the best wines are born from sustainably farmed vineyards meaning minimal intervention is needed in the cellar. We prefer to use wild yeast for fermentation and express natural colors, aromas, flavors, and textures gifted to us by the grapes we grow. All of our wines are Vegan and Gluten Free.
