Caymus Suisun Grand Durif Suisun Valley 2021
Separated from Napa by just an invisible county line, Suisun Valley (which became an AVA in 1982) is still largely undiscovered. With its warm days and cool nights, this pastoral region reminds us of Napa Valley in the 1960s. Known for delicious stone fruits and walnuts, it is also gaining recognition for exceptional wine. Durif is synonymous with Petite Sirah, the widely grown grape in the region – we added “Grand” to the name for its grand style. With harmonious tannins, this wine is opulent, luxuriously soft and totally enjoyable.
Nose: Ripe black fruit (blackberry jam, black cherry, dark plum, blueberry), baking spices, violet, cocoa powder, leather, and a hint of tobacco or mocha.
Palate: Full-bodied and velvety texture with flavors of dark plum, black licorice, black pepper, and toasty oak. The tannins are described as robust yet polished or smooth and well-integrated.
Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering notes of dark fruit, mocha, and spice.
Pairing
Grilled or braised beef (like short ribs or ribeye)
Lamb
Pepper-crustedsausages
Aged gouda
History
Family History – 1800s to Present Day The Wagners come from a long line of grape growers and winemakers in Napa Valley, with a farming tradition dating back to the 1850s. Chuck Wagner’s parents, Lorna Belle Glos and Charlie Wagner Sr., were both born to families that helped shape Napa Valley’s wine industry in the late 1800’s and beyond, through their hard work, dedication, pioneering spirit and resilience in the face of adversity. They are the Glos, Stice and Wagner families.

It was not long before the father-son winemaking team started producing wines that were rich in character and complexity. It was their 1973 Cabernet Sauvignon that really put them on the map. Catching the attention of wine critics, it earned them recognition and acclaim. That was the day the phone started to ring and it hasn’t stopped since. Charlie, Chuck and the next generation In 1975, Chuck and his dad noticed that there were a few barrels that tasted better than the rest, so they decided to separate them from the batch and bottle them under a new label called “Special Selection.”
In 1989, Wine Spectator awarded the prestigious “Wine of the Year Award” for their 1984 Caymus Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, and again five years later for their 1990 vintage. While it’s true that Caymus Vineyards is the only winery in the world to have twice earned Wine Spectator’s highest accolade, the Wagners did not stop there – it motivated them to keep striving to make better and better wines each and every year.
It’s been over 45 years since the Wagners founded Caymus Vineyards, and today they are proud to showcase a collection of wines that have a reputation for quality and consistency, produced from premier winegrowing regions of California and beyond. Charlie Wagner died at his Rutherford home in February 2002, in his 90th year. Son Chuck Wagner continues to oversee the making of world-renowned Caymus Cabernets. More recently he introduced Bonanza, a California-appellation Cabernet Sauvignon that celebrates the discovery of vineyard land throughout our great state as well as the simple pleasure of enjoying a good glass of wine.
Chuck is thankful to have two of his four children, Charlie and Jenny, farming the land alongside him and carrying on the family legacy.
This is a big, black, juicy Petite Sirah with notes of toasted herbs, deep boysenberry fruit and prunes alongside tobacco, black cherry, and baking spices. The style of this wine is full throttle and no holds barred – rich, ripe, and begging for a big rack of prime rib. If you love Caymus Cabernet, you’re going to flip for this one.
A vibrant, velvety purple, this vintage features scents of supple leather and earthy wood. The nose is layered with notes of ripe blackberries, rose petals and a hint of clove. Extremely fine, smooth tannins envelop the palate right away, held in seamless balance by this wine’s oak. Flavors of berry cobbler mingle with leather, a wisp of fresh campfire, blooming flowers, and chocolate-covered raisins. Dark chocolate carries over to the finish alongside bright fruit and a luxurious, delicate texture.
