Tir Na N'og Old Vines Grenache McLaren Vale

Tanzer Rating: 90
Vintage: 2008
Vines were first planted in McLaren Vale in the mid 1800s with pioneers such as Thomas Hardy, John Reynell and Dr AC Kelly, leading the charge with their passion being for Rhone varieties, notably Shiraz (Syrah), Grenache and Mourvedre. There was a further wave of plantings to the north of the McLaren Flat initiated primarily by Italian immigrants. These higher elevation vineyards have some of the most treasured Old Vine sources for Grenache.

Fruit sourced from 3 old vine vineyards from low and high elevation in McLaren Vale has again created a 100% Grenache wine that is highly aromatic, with berries galore and hints of exotic spices leaping from the glass. Layer upon layer of fruit is evident sip after sip. Raspberry, strawberry, blackberry. Delicious, lush and persistent. Great texture. You need not be an expert in Grenache to enjoy this wine. It is simply wonderful.--Winemakers Note

Vivid ruby. Raspberry and boysenberry aromas are complemented by peppery spices and incense. Fleshy black raspberry preserve and cola flavors show very good clarity and gain power with air. Finishes velvety and sweet, with lingering spiciness. This should age well on its balance.--Josh Raynolds of Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
