One could gain the impression that time was stopped at the end of the sixties in this winery in Urzig. The Merkelbach brothers, whose winery is in a sidestreet down towards the river, are firm believers in tradition, though for the future they are considering the purchase of a yeast filter for clarifying the musts. They have never considered cultivating anything other than Riesling vines. The two bachelors have 1.2 hectares in the Urziger Wurzgarten vineyard, with vines-40 years old on average-being trained up on individual poles.-Galt Millau
The bachelor Merkelbach brothers seem like the elves of the Mosel. Small in stature and always grinning from ear to ear, they are devoted to making Rieslings that are easy to love. The Merkelbach Rieslings from the Wurzgarten-spice garden-vineyard are indeed spicy and exuberant, with lots of slate and lacy peach flavors.- Karen MacNeil
