La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza Rioja Reserva Especial
This is only the third vintage in twelve decades in which La Rioja Alta has bestowed the designation Reserva Especial on one of its wines. The other two vintages were 1973 and the downright mythical 1964.
The 2001 Vina Ardanza Reserva Especial is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha. After undergoing alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred into American oak casks averaging three years of age. It stayed in cask for an elevage of 36 months before being bottled in September 2005. After five years of hibernation in the La Rioja Alta cellars at Haro, this wine is finally ready for its close-up.
The palate is kaleidoscopic in its complexity, with Indian spice, Vanilla, saddle leather, balsamic and a top note of cherry that sings with the shiver-inducing clarity of a struck tuning fork.--Winemakers Note
The current release is the 2001 Reserva Especial, a deeply colored wine with a lovely perfume of cinnamon, lavender, incense, balsamic, and black cherry. Medium-bodied, velvety-textured, and already complex, it will continue to evolve for another 5-10 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2016 to 2036. For those seeking immediate gratification, it has the virtue of being approachable now.--Wine Spectator
