In 1856 a German immigrant named Gottlieb Brekle started the brewing beer in Francisco during the Gold Rush. Brekle applied for citizenship in 1854. The money accrued helped him open his little San Francisco brewery. Ernst F. Baruth and his son-in-law soon bought the old brewery and the business grew from their. Today ''steam'' is a trademark of Anchor Brewing. To this day nobody knows why the named the brewery ''Anchor Steam.''

''Rich amber hue. Moderately full-bodied. Medium bitterness. Aromas show an assertively aromatic hop character and subtle caramel notes. Full flavored with a fine toasty malt palate and a crisp, clean character with an almost Pilsner-like bitterness to the finish.''
