The Single Malt Scotch industry has been in a bit of a tailspin, recently. Too much demand and not enough whisky have caused prices to skyrocket. Almost daily I hear people complain about how their favorite whisky used to cost them $30-$40 less than what they are paying now. Truthfully, I take this with a grain of salt because it’s been about 10 years since they paid those prices. Prices go up every year…it’s a fact of life. If that wasn’t the case, you could still buy a new Corvette for $6,000. But this eLetter isn’t about a price increase…it’s about a price decrease.
I think it was about 3 years ago that the Talisker 175th Anniversary was released. This whisky commemorated Talisker’s founding in 1830. The wholesale price on this whisky was $89/bottle and I was charging $116.99/bottle. This was a fair price, but nothing spectacular. I’d say it was a standard market price. Well, I was recently approached by my distributor to take their remaining cases. This whisky was a one-time bottling and I guess they just wanted to get rid of what they had. Until I sell out, I’m going to put the Talisker 175th Anniversary Single Malt Scotch Whisky on sale for $74.99/bottle. That’s a 36% discount off my everyday price. Not only that, but it’s the lowest price in the country.
